Lesson Development
- Remind students that we have been learning about the difference between wants and needs.
- Ask students to explain what we went over the previous day regarding wants and needs (examples and their definitions of the terms).
- Explain that today we will be connecting our study of wants and needs to a very famous piece of artwork.
- Project the photograph of the piece of artwork on the board and state the title: "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." Allow students to look at it briefly and raise their hands to discuss what they see in the work of art. To add interest and information about the famous painting, explain to the students why this painting is so famous. Explain that the artist's name is George Seurat and it was painted in 1884 (emphasize how long ago that was compared to 2014). Explain that this painting is so special because the artist used a technique called Pointillism. Explain that he made dots to form the illustration. If desired, show a close up picture of the painting that exhibits the dots.
- Ask the students if these seem to be poor or rich people in the piece. Ask the students what some needs of people are (food, water, clothing, shelter, air). Ask the students what some wants appear to be of these people and how they know that (umbrella to shade the sun, fancy clothing, pets, sailboat, etc.).
- Explain that we get a sense of the lives of the people at this time period presented in this painting through looking at the painting and noticing the needs and wants present in the painting.
