Overview & Description of Unit
This Wants and Needs unit is designed to be taught in a Kindergarten classroom. The Unit is comprised of five lessons to be taught over the course of five days. The Unit combines historical perspectives, art terms and techniques, and current events in today's society. An end-of-unit assessment is included on this website, as well as teacher resources, children's texts, and background information. The Essential Questions are as follows: "What are the differences between needs and wants?"; "How do needs and wants impact our lives?"; "How do families meet their needs and wants?" Justification for Topic The topic for this unit on wants and needs was chosen because it directly aligns with what is being taught currently for social studies in Kindergarten classrooms this quarter. Economics and financial literacy has always been the most interesting social studies category during my education career. I feel that financial literacy is something that is directly applicable to every person's life and should be introduced at a very young age. Connection to Citizenship Development It is important for students to begin learning basic economic concepts at a young age to allow for full economic competency as an adult. The first step in this process is for students to realize what things are necessary for their lives and which are luxuries. This will help students prioritize items and services to best meet their needs. Every choice they make in this area will impact the economy in one way or another. Students will learn to become productive citizens and knowledgeable consumers which will affect their lives and their community's lives. Young consumers need to realize the benefits and costs of their choices and actions. They need to learn that one of their roles as a citizen is to be knowledgable and responsible of their economic duties. Citizens must pay dues and taxes which is a need that may affect the citizen's wants. It is our job as educators to provide tools necessary for students to become successful and productive citizens. |
