"A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte"
The artist of this famous painting is George Seurat. The painting is oil on canvas through the technique of Pointillism. Seurat preferred the Pointillism technique to simply mixing colors on a palette because he believed it retained the integrity of the colors and allowed from the human eye to blend them on its own. The piece is also unique due to the emphasis on light and shadows. The painting helped begin the Neoimpressionism time period, founded by Seurat. The painting gives a peek into the lives of the wealthy in Paris, France. Seurat had the help of eight boats, three dogs, and forty-eight people gathered on the Island to plan and sketch this masterpiece. After working on it for two years, he premiered the piece in 1886 at an exhibition. The piece can be seen at the Art Institute of Chicago.
